Over the past decade, bioLNG has evolved from a niche renewable fuel into one of the most promising solutions for decarbonising heavy-duty transport, shipping, and off-grid energy applications. Behind much of this development stands Nord Gas Solutions, whose Puregas CA biogas upgrading and MR liquefaction technology have helped establish bioLNG as a commercially viable and scalable renewable fuel across Europe.
Nord Gas Solutions entered the biogas sector over twenty years ago through the development of its Puregas CA biogas upgrading technology. By focusing on high methane recovery, low methane slip, low electricity consumption and reliable plant operation, the company established a strong position in the biomethane market, delivering more than 65 references across Europe and North America. While early projects targeted gas grid injection and compressed biomethane, Nord Gas Solutions recognised an important market opportunity: liquefying biomethane into bioLNG. Liquefaction would allow renewable gas to access the rapidly growing heavy-duty transport sectors while leveraging the existing LNG infrastructure established across Europe.
A major milestone came in 2013 with the delivery of Nord Gas Solutions’ first biogas liquefaction plant in Norway. At the time, bioLNG was still an emerging concept, and the project served as an important proof of concept that upgraded biogas could be liquefied and used within the existing LNG value chain.
Five years later, in 2018, the company delivered its second commercial bioLNG plant, also in Norway, confirming that bioLNG production was both technically feasible and commercially attractive, ready for wider deployment across Europe.
Since then, bioLNG plants have been delivered to Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Latvia, the Netherlands and project execution is ongoing for the first bioLNG plant in Poland. As of 2026, Nord Gas Solutions have delivered fourteen bioLNG and together, these projects represent approximately 400 tonnes per day of bioLNG production, corresponding to roughly 2 TWh of renewable energy annually.
The company's contribution to bioLNG extends beyond conventional biogas liquefaction. Nord Gas Solutions has also supplied grid-gas liquefaction facilities in Germany and Sweden (in execution phase) that produce bioLNG through biomethane certificates. These installations add around 500 tonnes per day of liquefaction capacity, effectively more than doubling the company's impact on the European bioLNG market.
Today, bioLNG is increasingly viewed as a key component of Europe's renewable energy mix. By connecting renewable gas production to existing LNG infrastructure, it enables energy storage, transport flexibility, and significant greenhouse gas reductions.
Nord Gas Solutions' portfolio of biogas upgrading and liquefaction projects has played an important role in making that market possible.
A key reason for Nord Gas Solutions' success has been its focus on practical, commercially proven solutions to ensure uptime and operational efficiency. The plants are designed to produce bioLNG at -160°C, creating a fuel that is fully interchangeable with conventional fossil LNG.
The integrated Puregas CA upgrading and MR liquefaction technologies offer industry-leading performance, helping to shape the European bioLNG market.
